What kind of background do programming contest winners have? How is it that they are able to tackle these problems that I as a BSc Computer Science graduate cannot solve?

Answer:
When we look at programming contest winners we just see some code been typed, what we dont see is years of dedication towards problem solving skills and utmost attention towards basics of algorithms. Programming language is merely a tool for translation, what matters is the approach which is developed through practicing your problem solving skills.

I think they have a very good Maths background, Computer Science doesn't make you a good mathematician or a problem solver. I also graduatedĀ BSc Comp. ScieĀ and my maths was average 55-60%
