What are some good vegetarian-friendly restaurants to go to in Paris?
-
My SO is a vegetarian, I am not. What'll be good for us both? Assume we're adventurous eaters otherwise. Assume we've had Vietnamese, North African, Mediterranean food before and we like it, but they are not our primary reason for visiting Paris.

A friend and I tried Le Potager Du Marais and were pretty satisfied. I had a three-course meal for 25 euros. This course, my main course, is a quinoa+vegetable+tofu patty topped with mushroom sauce, a salad on the left, and sweet potatoes as a side. I also chose a soup and dessert, and all of it was really good. http://www.lepotagerdumarais.com/ Maoz is always a good option for a quick, cheap, and good falafal pita. The one at 36 Rue Saint-André des Arts is really clean and more spacious than the other one nearby. http://www.maozusa.com/restaurants/locations/paris

There is an AWESOME vegetarian restaurant called SOYA in the 3rd Arr. I went with friends who were not vegetarian, and everyone left very full and very happy. It's not far from the Republique metro stop. http://www.soya75.fr/ 20 Rue de la Pierre Levée 75011 Paris, France 01 48 06 33 02

Vegetarian friendly is rather hard to come by: food means meat, usually â exclusively so for âcharcuterieâ (pork-based specialties) and certainly for most French bistro cuisine. Sorry about that. There are ways to accommodate, though. The most tourist-friendly restaurants (hint: menus in English) will have veggie options but they aren't necessarily those with the best food in general or the best prices⦠High end restaurants usually rely on a megalomaniac misanthropic dude who's both great at his job (making food) and extremely sensitive at being told what to do (not putting meat in there) so unless you know what you are doing, expect at least the worst frown from the waiter. I know a place where you'd get thrown out by the boss (although a friend told me the boss is almost nice to customers now). You can always get a veggie-couscous at North African restaurants. There aren't the most common in touristy areas, but go in more humble neighborhoods, and you'll see. Asian-looking restaurants might be trickier: no matter what it says on the front, most are operated by Chinese or sometimes Japanese, who consider that pork isn't a meat, it's an essential component of every meal, so⦠though luck. Some are Thai, with actual Thai food, that has a wide variety of veggie dishes â and the good ones are actually quite good (thanks to a tumultuous colonial history with the region). Indian restaurants are nowhere near as good as in the UK (no tumultuous history there); I'm ashamed of thatâbut they have veggie options. Similarly, most Italian restaurants aren't great, but some are very worthy (hint: kitschy decor, bad address), and they have a few cheese- or mushrooms-based dishes without meat. I don't know about African (sub-Saharan) food; I like it, but it always had meat in itâalthough I'm assuming they must have other recipes available. It won't be too typically French, but you have to try Bob's Kitchen (quick lunch) because âBobâ is the nicest guy in the world and Le Potager du Marais (both to-go and seated restaurant), near Beaubourg, the places you want to try for a great fully-veggie-mostly-vegan menu. They have fantastic exclusive dishes so if you don't know what it is, try. Stay away from them trying to imitate meat-based dishes (pot-au-feu is a beef-based recipe and no way of mishandling tofu is going to change that.) If you come across most options, please send them to me: I have several academic friends who come by, and several are veggies.
