As a student in computer engineering with extensive experience, how do I fit everything on a one page resume?
-
I am currently a 3rd year computer engineering student, and will hopefully have around 4 co-op/internship terms (16 months) in industry by the time I graduate, as well as work experience with a research group, my personal projects/startup and several intensive academic projects and a final year capstone design project. Although I've heard the general rule of thumb not to have a 2-page resume unless you have more than 10 years of experience, I believe shortening my resume and not including a lot of my experiences would be selling myself short. What should I do?

General rule of thumb: 1. If it is not important, exclude it. Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize!!! You might want to tell the world about your accomplishments but if they don't want to hear/don't care as it's unimportant, your resume ends up in the trash can as soon as you begin to bore them. It reflects on your maturity to include relevant substantial information and respect for their time. 2. If it is important and makes your resume flow into two pages, apply for an equivalent position to someone with similar experience and not as a fresh grad! All the best. Learn to make things concise. Run it by friends for help if you are unable to do so yourself. The page per decade of experience is pretty much a strict rule for undergrads.

Your resume should fit into a one page but it doesn't have to be the same page in all cases. One very effective technique is to adapt your resume to the position you apply to. You can have few version of the resume for few types of positions. The extremists write a version of their resume per position and give more weight to the requirements of the given position and company.
