What is a good salary for a recent college graduate?

What does a B.tech Mechanical Engineering graduate, just out of college require to do to draw a starting salary of 1 lakh per month in India?

  • I know that there are a lot of variables involved like the college one comes from, the company, one's CGPA. But I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone answers this based on the average situations that lead to the salary.

  • Answer:

I'm assuming you're talking about a core job. To be honest with you, if you look at the average Mechanical Engineer graduating from India, a starting salary of 1 Lakh per month is not very likely. It would be best if you abandoned this goal, and concentrated on developing a reputation/skills that would fetch you a higher paying (much stabler) job in the future, with adequate amount of experience.  I just graduated from NITK Surathkal and got a decent job with a reasonable salary (not 1 Lakh p.m.). In my batch only 1 student got placed in a core company with a salary in the region of 1 Lakh p.m. Coming to your question, the "average situation" is a toughie. Mostly because the cases are so far and few, that taking an average really wouldn't make sense. I wouldn't like to name any companies, but there are 3-4 bigshot companies that recruit Mechanical Engineers (mostly from IITs, few from NITs) with payscales comparable to that of any Software Giant. Again, these people are extremely selective and I've heard a fair amount of luck is also needed to get through the recruitment process. Lastly, If you are only concerned with the number on your paycheck at the end of your month, and want to stay India, I suggest you do an MBA (if you are willing to abandon your field) or an MS(if you are willng to leave the country).

Hey! If you are expecting a salary in the range of 1 lakh per annum, I am sorry to disappoint you, but it is difficult. That type of salary is received by students graduating from premier institutes like IITs and get job in companies like ONGC . Check this link : http://zuby.in/resources/trends/salary-of-engineering-streams-in-india.html  . It gives an average of what graduates receive as a salary package in India. Mind you, this does not include the packages of IITian students. Hope it helps! Cheers ! :)

Well it's not impossible but it's difficult to get a starting salary as 1 Lpm. You can make a try. Try to get an expertise in any of the Mech field which you like, starting from your undergraduate year. It is kind of a hypothesis because mostly, students are not aware of the fields and directions in Mech. But you can research and try. Your major project should be world class, if possible submit it to some international competitions. It's true that college matters but not more than the knowledge. If you have a very strong grip over your subject, college then becomes secondary. Be academically sound. I am not saying to be a topper all time but yeah atleast to that much level where you should not be feeling low while telling your CGPA. Try making contacts and taking projects from companies of your choice. You may have to go through long dicussions and wait but keep trying. Make yourself recognizable to a community or at college or national level for some of your extraordinary work and skills.
