How can I implement a multilayer social network in R?

What is the best way to try to implement a social network in a big international European construction company?

  • I just started a 6 month internship in one of the major european construction companies. They have some ideas and developed some tools in order to progress in the knowledge management politic. My mission is to think and elaborate an idea that will hopefully become an actual tool, bringing social collaboration and knowledge sharing  a more important place in every day work in this companie. So far, what i can see from this companie, is that top management is very interested in this mission , but the bottom part is going to be much more complicated (construction = hard men work =  "whe don't need facebook to do our jobs"). The idea is NOT going with the usual suspect solution (MS, oracle, SAP, IBM), however i might visit them to see what is the offer.

  • Answer:

First find a problem that can be solved efficiently by an internal social network. Technology in itself is no benefit, so find out, what can be improved by the use of technology. Are two teams working on similar projects because they don't know of each other's work? Is it hard to find the right expert outside of your department? Is knowledge locked in one department and another department can't use it? For all those use cases you can make up solutions be using social network technologies. Sometimes a wiki might be a good thing, for another task a collaboration room, a microblogging solution etc... It's not the tool itsel that excites people and management, it's the perspective to do your work more efficciently or more fullfilled, so i suggest to start to think about the human side, the problems people have at work, and then come up with techological solutions. I wish you all the best.

Usual suspects tend to offer minimal social features but with some third party product on top can be great combination (because of their horizontal integration). If thinking of Microsoft you can check out http://www.gobeezy.com. Hope it helps!

There are several open source solutions to creating online commnuties for colaboration. I have 2 sites where like minded people can connect and share items or information with each other. (http://www.dropshipaustralia.com.au and http://www.ozrecycle.com . Your solution will rely on how you want your system based.

I think using simple social interfaces for what they do.  Think of it as a sprint board in the Agile world.  What if the social interactions happened behind the scenes as projects are completed or using GPS hardware to geo locate certain products.  So that as a general contractor you can see the activity stream of what is happening in your project on a day to day basis?

You might try launching a corporate wiki to get info about the company together. Then solicit edits from the other employees. This might get the ball rolling.
