Which is the best place to visit based on having unique, memorable cultural experience: Brazil, Belize, the Galapagos islands, Peru, Chile, Ecuador or Costa Rica?
-
Why? Cultural experience includes what the community is like traveling through, talking to people, eating food, seeing/learning about the history. It could also be defined as meaning roughly the opposite of a place resembling the US since that's everyday life)

Answer:
The question's emphasis on "culture" over and above natural wonders, landscapes, etc., weighs against Belize, the Galapagos, Ecuador and Costa Rica. The tourism industry does all of these countries a disservice by tagging them as "eco-tourism" destinations, but even the crudest stereotypes have some truth behind them. Chile is one of the world´s most beautiful and geographically diverse countries, but I'm not sure it offers the "otherness" you seem to be looking for. I won't say anything about Chilean cuisine, for fear of causing offence. Peru, on the other hand, offers terrific food and a well-preserved colonial and indigenous heritage. But unless you simply want to hang out with the North American and Israeli backpackers in Cuzco, you need to put some effort into making a trip to Peru as memorable as it ought to be. So we end up with Brazil, which is almost a continent onto itself. It has the region's most important mega-city (Saõ Paulo) and another urban masterpiece in Rio (not to mention Salvador, etc). It has crowded beaches, deserted islands, remote bolt-holes, Carnaval, the Amazon, and so on. So unless you have a particular fascination with Andean and/or Spanish colonial history and culture, I'd pick Brazil from that bunch.

This is for sure Brazil ! I've been to all the other countries and Brazil is the place with the most fascinating history, the funniest people and the most beautiful / various landscapes.

I'm afraid there's not much I can say about Chile: this country is becoming more an more a Spanish version of the US :) . Anyway if you are looking to see new things, I'd suggest: Patagonia, with an unknown history of european settlers exterminating the Selknam tribe, tall people described by Darwin and other europeans as "giants" or "patagones" (spanish for "big feet", hence Patagonia = "land of the big feet"). 2. Easter Island, remote outpost of Polinesian tribes that conquered the island but disappeared shortly after the first europeans discovered it, leaving a mistery about their origins and language until this day. Locals still keep their customs, culture and language, though the meaning of their written symbolic language and Moais (stone statues) are still unknown: 3. Elqui Valley. Vineyards, guided tours to Pisco (chilean spirit) distilleries. Home base of many ESO observatories due to its clear skies, and making headlines on astronomical discoveries every week. In the town of Vicuna there is a museum of Gabriela Mistral, chilean poet and Nobel prize who was born there: 4. The Lakes region. It was inhabited by the Mapuche people, one of the bravest tribes europeans ever encountered in Americas. They fought back Inkas, Spaniards and Chilean troops for almost 5 centuries, and continue using guerrilla warfare against the chilean police's special forces today. The region was also colonized by german settlers since 1850, giving their german style to architecture , cuisine and some traditions like the Oktoberfest. It's worth noting that Chile has over 90 active volcanoes alll year round, which makes this the most "volcanic" country on Earth. Most are safe to climb and visit, and there are guided tours to some of them, like the Villarrica ("Richville") volcano: Others like the Calbuco mountain below, are less friendly but make the best pictures: 5. San Pedro de Atacama, a popular tourist destination on the north end of Chile. There are archeological remains from the Inka empire and other ancient tribes, and also the entry point to the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world, with some areas with no records of rain for over a century. There are also ghost towns from the "Saltpeter fever", some 150 years ago: 6. Port of Valparaiso. Bizarre architecture on top of hills. UNESCO World Heritage site since 2003:

My first answer on this site will be recommending another one, which is certainly one of best, if not best, for traveler questions: http://www.tripadvisor.com - go to Brazil Forums and get feedback from frequent travelers and amateur travel specialists. My own answer, at least regarding Brazil, is that you have to consider that Brazil is made up of a variety of regions - some stronger in natural aspects, other in culinary, some in historic, a few combining several attractions. Salvador, for example, is a vibrant location, very different from Rio de Janeiro, which is equally diverse from the Amazon region and from the historic cities of Minas Gerais. Now, perhaps it's least opposite of US - perhaps most opposite: Andes and its culture, therefore Peru.
