How to separate audio from video?

How do I match up separate audio and video?

  • I have a video (both sound and picture) and also a separately recorded audio of the same thing. I'd like to replace the video's audio with the separate audio. How can I do that?

  • Answer:

The easiest way is to use a piece of software called Plural Eyes, which digitally matches the waveforms of different audio sources. It's very cool and has saved me a lot of time over the years. Alternatively, your video editing software may have a synchronising feature. (e.g FCP X) but it might not be quite as good.

Find a sync point. Something that is easy to see and easy to hear (and see in wavelength) most people use a clapboard for that, but clapping anything will do. A clap is a very small loud sound that is easy to see using wave length and good to see when watching the video frame by frame. So find a sync point and remember the clap next time
