How can I get a job in the USA as a UK citizen and ultimately get a green card, with the ability to stay in the country forever?
-
I want to get any job I can possibly get in the USA that will allow me to not only build some valuable work experience, but also allow me to eventually get a green card in the process, allowing me to stay in the country for as long as I want. Preferably this would allow me also to maintain my British citizenship and ability to live in either country as I please, though ultimately I really want to become a resident of the USA permanently. I am most interested in finance; perhaps if I go into an investment bank here I could switch to the USA... or maybe I could go to a smaller, less competitive IB firm in the USA from the beginning. Hopefully someone can give me some suggestions here. Thank you.

Your question is missing some key points. The background is that to get to another country, you will need a reason - such as a company willing to file the paperwork for your visa, willing to compensate you for your skills/time and wanting you in US so badly that they will file for your green card. The filing for a green card is expensive (thousands of dollars just in fees, not counting the expertise of in-house legal teams and filing/immigration teams), there are many requirements, and once you have it, you are able to work for any employer in US. Basically, you can leave the company as soon as you have your green card. There are not many companies who can afford it - and those that can are very choosy of their sponsorship. (While on work visa, you can only work for one company - the company that sponsors your visa, which is a limitation; so if you choose to leave the company, there must be another company who will file for your work visa, so you may remain in US). Companies are aware of it, so they rotate their workforce and are under no obligation to file for a green card - unless you are at some high level within the company and are a company's officer/key worker. The part that's missing is your skills. What can you do that a company with presence in US and UK can't find among the existing workforce population?

Lots of ways. The finance route would be to work a few years in the UK and then transfer to the US on a L-1 visa for intra-company transfers (no cap like the H1B). From the L-1, they'd sponsor your petition for adjust status to EB-1C permanent residence. It would take... I dunno, take a decade? The fastest way is marrying an American but, well, that comes with it's own problems.
