What are the vocal ranges of these classical singers?

How accurate is this chart of popular singers' vocal ranges?

  • Answer:

C5 is a very respectable money note for world-famous, hard-to-find operatic tenors who can project out to the cheap seats without a microphone. That chart implies that Thom Yorke is some kind of quantitative and qualitative vocal prodigy - he's Super Bass and can sing all day as an alto! He's a resourceful musician, but he's not a vocal god. Music fans should be aware that many of these ranges are unsustainable creations of the recording studio, consisting of a lot of notes that require a good deal of unhealthy reach, amplification so they're audible even in an unplugged setting, and further electronic processing.

Ehhhh, this seems to incorporate the entire "range" and doesn't take into account non-modal notes (i.e. -- vocal fry/whistle/falsetto, etc.). For example, Mariah Carey's modal range tops off at about A5 (in 'Fly Like A Bird') but she has plenty of non-modal notes above A5 -- apparently about another two octaves. Everything above F6 is definitely whistle and from C5-F6 is falsetto. I could probably pick apart some other people on that list, but that was the one that struck out the most to me.

Greg Clayman

Nope. Axl doesn't go lower than F2, and not sure about his whistle. Mariah Carey doesn't go lower than like a tenor c3 or b2 but the whistle seems right. Prince, john Lennon, Elvis Presley, and many others don't even come close to those low notes, basically everything there is totally wrong. Even Barry White who is a bass, doesn't have a "good" f1. Beyonce, Jeff Buckley, Freddy mercury, Tina turner, those look like the closet to accurate on that chart, but you'd have to listen to each specifically cuz they are only "close to accurate" and not accurate In definition.

It seems the high pitch of this table should be lowered one octave to be accurate... Tom Waits can sing up to F4, not F5.Also, it doesn't take into account the singer's technique. While Axl, Prince & James Brown can reach very high notes, they do it using their head voice, and starting at a relatively low pitch (around F#4). It means they sound very different at high pitch than in lower, chest voice. Their 'high' voice lacks a lot of body and fullness.Other singers (for example Mercury, McCartney & Buckley) , who rank lower in the 'chart' have an amazing technique throughout their vocal range. Their voice sounds full at any pitch, not losing its unique color.

The chart is accurate, but it's missing Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle), who currently has the widest vocal range.
