Can I get an MBA with my 2 B.A's in?

Should I get a Harvard MPP or a Kellogg MBA?

  • I work at a top-tier consulting firm and am applying to multiple programs, including Harvard's MBA, Harvard's MPP, and Kellogg's MBA program. I am assuming I get into Harvard's MPP program and Kellogg's MBA program. Assuming I can achieve my short-term goals (consulting/business) and long-term goals (international development/politics) with either, are there any tangible benefits to the Harvard MPP over the Kellogg MBA? To clarify: If I do not get into both Harvard's MBA and MPP program, then I intend to pursue just one degree (i.e. Harvard's MPP or Kellogg MBA)

  • Answer:

Sounds like the only variable in your decision tree is whether or not you get into HBS. You should definitely pick HBS if you also get into the MPP as the combined degrees fit your career. I removed my initial "get in where you can", that is just not constructive - sorry!

For  expert insight on this question, I asked my senior colleague Jeff Phillips (Harvard MPA and Kellogg MBA) for his comments quoted here: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "Schools focused on public affairs, such as Harvard’s Kennedy School, are best-suited to those hoping to assume roles upon graduation that are focused on finding solutions to social challenges.  Courses at these schools typically fall into one of three categories: public policy, public administration, and nonprofit management.  The MPP, then, is a good fit for those who plan to focus on addressing social ills in either a public (governmental) or nonprofit setting. "By contrast, MBA programs are (not surprisingly) geared first and foremost to successfully establishing and managing for-profit enterprises, with most such programs offering a smattering of nonprofit management courses as well. The MBA, then, is a good fit for those who foresee a future in for-profit and (perhaps) nonprofit settings. "For those who want to cover all the bases and hone their ability to steer for-profit, nonprofit, and governmental entities over the course of a varied career, a three-year MBA/MPP dual degree program might be the answer. "The network you become a part of as an alumnus will, understandably, reflect the nature of the school which you attend." -- Jeff Phillips +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++     So, if you would like a http://www.mbaexchange.com/evaluation of your MBA, MPP and/or MPA candidacy, we would be glad to provide one for you. If you want to go the international dev/politics route long-term, I think you're going to have a better alumni network over at the Harvard MPP program (rather than Kellogg). Leah Derus Website: http://fxmbaconsulting.com/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCacB1ueqfkRVW5pcMZKAj5w

Hi, I did the MPA from the Kennedy School and I think that if you have the doubt try doing both. Try the MPP/MBA with HBS or try the MPA and MBA at many different schools where you can get the two degrees in three years. I have many consulting friends that did this and I think it is the best of both worlds. You get access to both networks and have your options open for the future if you want to go into something more publicly-related.

Kellogg MBA. There are few tangible benefits to the Harvard MPP with the goals you stated over Kellogg. Kellogg will open far more doors, particularly in international development and, I personally feel, politics. The HKS MPP alumni network is relatively weak compared to Kellogg's.
