How would you compare Canada to the US?

How does the cost of generic drugs compare between the US and Canada?

  • Cipralex (or Lexapro) goes generic in March 2012 in the US but doesn't go generic in Canada until 2014. Let's say that you buy a generic made by the same company in both the US and Canada - is it going to be more expensive in the US than it is in Canada?

  • Answer:

You have to look on a case by case basis. Use a site like Pharmacy Checker to compare International prices on products to your local U.S. supply. In general most things are always less expensive outside the U.S. when it comes to medication, however there are exceptions. Some of those exceptions are the generics that company like Walgreens and CVS put on their $4 and $10 generic lists that they sell at or below cost just to get you in the door.
