What kind of camera would be best for video blogging for the web and mobile?
-
I want to do video blogging, and possibly interviews. Nothing too spectacular just needs to be good enough for the web and mobile.

I'm with Steve on the Zi8. It's a good camera with great quality video and sports a line-in audio. Get a decent microphone with it and it's a perfect interview machine. The video on most pocket camera's are good enough for video blogging these days. With 720p and video stabilization the only thing you have to worry about is low light conditions. Usually these cameras struggle there because of the small lens and sensor. You can make a jump in quality by adding two things: (1) a good external microphone (2) a way to keep the video stabilized If you have good sound to complement a great picture quality the quality perception of the video goes up tenfold. You can try to stabilize using a tripod but be weary of creating a very static video with one viewpoint. If you can tape the same interview or blog video from a different angle and mix those in with the video. Another tip to stabilize pocket cams is to get a Gorrillapod type tripod and bend the legs so you can hold it with two hands. It will look much more stabile and professional. Good luck!

Do you already own camera that shoots video. It might be good enough. Maybe you have a point and shoot camera that shoots video. Otherwise, I like the Kodak PlaySport as an entry level Pocket HD Video camera. If you want to add a microphone, you can look at getting the Kodak Zi8.

Proper lighting has a big impact but sound is much more important than video. It's the source of the biggest quality problems. Make sure the camera has a socket for an external mic and fit a good one - get it as close to your mouth as is possible without showing. That will reduce bathroom like echoes. Editing is a reality if you want the video to be taken seriously. Compelling one shot films are the domain of very experienced directors. So either connect the camera to the computer directly or use an SDHC card to transfer the video. Free editing packages like Lightworks can be found from a Google search and will do just fine. Image quality is more affected by sensor type and lens size than number of pixels. I often use my iPhone but with external mics and an Owle Bubo to improve quality.

I guess it depends on your needs. For coverage and on the spot interviews, an iPad or Flip or a mobile phone with video capture can do. However, for a full blown video blog programme, I use Canon EOS D60.

I think that people think too much about the camera and not enough about the content. Having said if I was starting to video blog today all over again I would go with in this order... An iPhone (perfect HD quality and decent sound as long as you are not in a busy crowded place) Your Webcam if you are at home and just doing a Vlog or video diary type podcast Both of these options are perfect unless you are trying to do something far more professional. Remember it's not the way it's shot but the content that matters.

I would suggest having an iPhone 5S (very good video camera) with a relatively cheap external microphone. You will be very mobile in this case. I do a lot of videos this way. Also I recommend having a video organization app / service like http://2gzr.com It will help you though the whole process.

I'd be hard pressed to substitute any camera for my iPhone and I've tried a few. So far great videos for quick blogging, etc. and with iMovie you can easily do YouTube quickies. There are solutions for using an external mic I'm told but I have not found one.

That really depends on how much money will be invested, the equipment for editing and skill with video editing. Can be done cheap or really expensive.
