What is the best blogging platform for an independent musician?

  • I'm trying to help my friend launch a music focused blog. Being a musician, she's not extremely tech savvy but still want to take advantage of the services of a blog to share news on her latest projects with her numerous collaborators and stakeholders. The ideal platform should allow her to share recordings easily, either via a link or as an embedded file; and also allow easy commenting by friends and fans alike. Given these needs, what's a good platform for her to use?

    Tumblr. Not only is it free (as pointed out) and incredibly easy to use, but the customisation options mean your friend can have a uniquely designed blog with relatively little skill. The features on Tumblr allow you to both upload individual MP3s (up to 10MB in size each), or link to your SoundCloud account and embed your songs from there with one click. Many of the themes make it easy to plug in comments (see my answer to for some ideas), which means you can easily receive feedback from your fans. Above all, the most attractive thing about Tumblr is the built-in social community. With nearly 30 million blogs and easily searchable curated content streams, the potential to grow your network among people with similar interests, influences and musical tastes is huge. Tumblr is one of the fastest growing social networks in the world, has overtaken WordPress with a higher number of registered blogs and has a higher ratio of active accounts than Twitter. I used Tumblr for my last band, as well as a number of other current blogs, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
