What is a WEP enterprise?

Which wireless encryption standard should I use? WEP, WPA-person, WPA-enterprise, or something else?

  • My router provides all these options and it isn't clear which one is the best choice.

  • Answer:

WPA2 > WPA > WEP in terms of security.  WEP can be cracked very quickly and is considered extremely insecure. As for WPA-enterprise, using certificates for authentication over WPA2 is the most secure but is difficult to set up and thus is usually only recommended for corporations.

For personal use, WPA2-Personal with AES only (turn off anything that says TKIP) is sufficient, as long as you use a very long and hard to guess passphrase. For corporations we recommend WPA2-Enterprise with EAP-TLS as the Authentication scheme.  Setting this up requires a RADIUS server and a corporate certificate authority.  Both of these servers are bundled with Windows 2008R2.  OS X Server supports RADIUS, but you'll have to generate the certificates manually. It sounds like you are doing this at home, so go for option #1.

On top of what Chris has truly put, keep in mind that wireless 'security' is like installing an alarm to your car; you do it so that "not everyone" would be able to jump in. (and WEP is sort of just leaving a 'do not steal' sign on a car left alone with engine running and doors open)

Do not even consider WEP. It can be cracked super easily these days. I would say the best protocol for home use is WPA2 Personal. Enterprise if you're in an office environment. Most home electronic appliances should support WPA2 Personal. (My 2 cents)
