How do you make your Flickr pictures public?

Why does Flickr seem to contain more beautiful/gorgeous pictures when compared to other photo-sharing sites? Why did other sites fail to make its users to do the same?

• It seems that Flickr users (the community) are very particular in keeping Flickr as THE place for quality pictures when compared to other sites. How did Flickr manages to do this?

  I think that Flickr's minimalist interface appealed to people with taste and that Flickr became the go-to site for aspiring and professionnal photographers alike. The community then snowballed from there. On the other hand, I also think that it's because Flickr really isn't adapted for sharing anything else than quality pictures. And by that I mean that for sharing casual pictures with a group of friends, Flickr is a horrid tool. - It's hard to give feedback; - Casual pictures are meant to be seen by the maximum number of friends—and there aren't many of them on Flickr; - Privacy settings suck, as you can see by the sheer number of personal pictures searchable on Flickr.
