Once I have a PhD, is it easy to find a professor job?

I have a B.Tech. I have a fat paying corporate job, but I would really like to be a professor in a good university. My GPA will not allow me to get admission in a good university for MS and PhD. What should I do?

  • I have a B.Tech from a top tier Engineering institute in India. But I slacked and had a very avg GPA(below 8/10). I do not have research publications as well which would help me to get admission in MS/PhD program of good universities. However I really enjoy teaching and I realize now that I do not like to work in a corporate environment (I am 1 year into job). Can anybody help me with the best thing to do at this point of time?

  • Answer:

You should search for universities that admit students based on an entrance exam. For instance, all IITs and IISc take students through GATE. (I don't think they have a minimum CGPA requirement in B.Tech, though you should check it.) Pursue a masters (MS or M.Tech.) from one of these colleges. You may also want to search for universities outside India, that admit students in a similar manner. Then, utilize your masters degree effectively, and build a strong profile to get into a good school for PhD.

Minimum requirement in India as per AICTE is MTech or equivalent with distinction. Options: GATE or any state specific entrance exam for PG. This will help you in university job. Alternatively, look for a part-time teaching opportunity at a local coaching institute. Build your profile and get into it full time over a course of few years. With your current qualification you could still try for a job at high school or +2 level.

Yea as Shrikant and Prashant mentioned, there are many ways you can persue your masters. I would recommend you to work hard to get good rank in GATE so that you can get in to IISC or IIT's which are ultimate places to persue your masters, here you will be having lot of oppurtunities to do research in your interested fields. And yeah, I do understand its a tough decision to quit job and start studying again but you must be wise enough to take decision what to do? Afterall you are worried about your CAREER and good CAREER with job satisfaction makes you happy in your whole LIFE. I can tell you one thing my friend , few years here on, when you look back you must not regret of what you have done for what you are now. All the very best!! And I hope my answer is helpful to you.
