Can I hook up an external monitor and a keyboard to my laptop?

Can I hook up a monitor to my laptop so that I can use the monitor as a desktop computer?

  • I want to have a bigger screen, so I was wondering if I could hook up a monitor to my laptop and then control everything on the monitor with a keyboard and mouse just like I was using a desktop.

  • Answer:

Yes you can. Read the manual for your laptop and it should tell you all about it. Or just plug your monitor into the port that has a little icon that looks like a monitor. Likewise with the keyboard and mouse. Most USB mice and keyboards should work.

I do this on a regular basis with my old laptop, whose battery barely lasts 30 mins and is too heavy to carry around anyway. It's a member of a class of laptops known as "desktop replacements" - laptops that can be too heavy and thick to be considered portable, but have the processing power of desktop-class computers. Simply enough, I attach an LCD monitor to my laptop, along with a wired keyboard and mouse, then place the laptop somewhere off to the side. It works perfectly fine.

If your laptop has a vga port you can easily do it by just plugging your monitor screen equipped with vga directly into it. If your computer and your flat screen tv have HDMI ports, you can plug them directly together.
