  • Answer:

Each platform has its pros and cons. On the front-end, you can style most ecommerce solutions to look how you want. Out-of-the-box the premium ecommerce solutions usually have better user experiences on the back-end. Although WP Ecommerce comes with some robust options, you'll still need a good WordPress developer to really shape it into something that competes with premium alternatives. So... you basically get what you pay for.

I am CTO at one of the ready-to-use cloud based eCommerce platform http://www.RetailEMall.com. Being in eCommerce since long and having extensive experience building eCommerce solutions, I can see the + and -ve of CMS like WP, Joomla and Drupal to use for eCommerce website in comparison to advanced eCommerce CMS like OpenCart and Magento. I strong advocate to use the right tool to complete the job in hand, never compromise on tools. If you try to cut apple with scissor, it might cut but not neatly, right ? My viewpoint - when advanced eCommerce solutions, developed keeping eCommerce in mind, are the present there one should not even think of going WP or Joomla way. WP, Joomla or Drupal are great tools but are not developed keeping eCommerce in mind, they are later tweeked with help of plugins to meet the need or rather compromise. I tried about 10 shopping carts (including pinnacle, shopify, virtuemart, etc) and in the end choose CS-cart. Without any previous knowledge I was able to launch 3 shops that are all doing great now. It's super easy to use, the community is super friendly and always there to help out. Best about it is that you can choose your own hosting - i did not want to be dependant on the hosting of the shopping cart company, because what would happen if they decide to do something with their product I don't agree with at all (an upgrade for example), or worse, if they go bankrupt? With self-hosted software, nobody can touch it. It's yours. This has another advantage: you can customize it completely to your liking. Something that, in the beginning, you might not think you'd need. But I can assure you, there will be 100's of little things after being online for a year. Good luck!

If you want to get the most out of your store, CMS like Joomla can be a helping hand. If you create a blog or forum at your store, it could a) make your site indexed more often as it would be updated frequently b) attract more visitors c) keep visitors engaged. As to troubleshooting difficulties, here's a good article on the issue: http://www.shopping-cart-diagnostics.com/blog/be-the-first-to-discover-the-revolutionary-way-of-virtuemart-troubleshooting/

I have no coding knowledge, I am simply passionate about marketing and trends in behaviour. Reccomendation for my online store: Virtuemart, Shopify or Magento (with a Joomla! already built site)
