Are startups in the travel domain in India becoming more of a fad?
-
I see a lot of startups from India coming in the Travel Domain. But most of them are :- a) Located in a Metropolitan in a Porche areas. b) Most of the startups are promoting luxury travel. c) Most of the people in Travel Domain claim to be passionate about travel while all they do is sit in an office in some porche area and code. d) Hardly any startup has a focus on sustainable living and solving problems of people living in tourist destinations. e) Most of the founders of these startups are frustrated from corporate life I.T engineers who ultimately end up doing the same thing that claim to hate. f) Rarely I see people involved in Travel Domain talking about Sustainable Living and Alternate ways of Consuming, working on projects related to environment preservation. g) Most of the travel startups are ignoring the basic fact that travelling is getting out of the comfort zone not getting out from a comfort zone and then again coming into another comfort zone. h) Shouldn't travel startups have some responsibility towards environment also ?

Answer:
Startups are generally guided by the size of addressable market, and in India, travel itself is about 3/4th of it. Secondly, the problem of travel is still not solved. Leave a perfect product, the existing ones are very mediocre. Its not a fad....i just think that we are taking baby steps towards a good product someday.

The control of Indian travel industry is mostly with the taxi drivers, rickshaws, local guides. I don't have to elaborate on the problems they have created and how messed up the situation is at ground. This is why it is really difficult in India to provide any solution online, because ultimately the customer has to deal with the same old people on the ground. That why we at goMowgli and some other startups are working on the ground, traveling the hard way ourselves so our customers don't have to. We are currently in the early stages and we already see what was missing in the market all these days. There is also a huge need for the kind of travel startups you have mentioned above, but there is a huge gap, between them and the travel companies on the ground. Very soon some of us will fill that gap.
