Countries that require a passport renewal within 6 months?

Why do some countries require 6 months left on a passport before leaving that country?

  • I wonder how people who travel internationally a lot handle this requirement.

  • Answer:

Many countries allow you to enter (with or without a visa, depending on their requirements) for up to 6 months.  By requiring your passport is valid for 6 months, they're ensuring that you won't get 'stranded' in their country without a valid passport to travel on (just like you have to have a return ticket, so you won't be unable to afford to leave).  Most savvy frequent travelers make sure they renew at least 6 months, often more, before their passport expires, to allow for this.

and 's answers are both correct. Individuals who travel internationally who find themselves with an upcoming passport expiration (or an expired passport) can usually request a renewal at the nearest embassy or consular office in the host country.  Some Embassies impose biometric (fingerprinting/photographing) requirements and may send applicants to Consular Offices instead.  Meanwhile, some Consulates may refer applicants to Embassies for passport renewals. Some countries (because of size) may only have an Embassy. The savvy and prepared international traveler should investigate this in advance. This answer is not a substitute for professional legal advice....
