What do users look for in a photography website?

  • I am trying to improve a photography website, and was wondering what you would look for in one. Is it bigger pictures? More chic style? Easier navigation?

    Brent said it well, essentially its easy to get caught up in all the flashy over designed sites, we all want to design right? In the end you need simple Navigation, I try to think of it as my physical portfolio, most art buyers want to look fast through the images, nothing irritates me more than waiting for a bloated flash site to load. Remember the art buyers may love design, but they are not at your site looking at design, they are looking at images. Now that being said, the design of the site represents your personality IMO so you want to express who you are but in a non overbearing way.

What people look for are Photos. Don't make flashy, long to load animations that are going to test people's patience and then force them elsewhere. Man what a pet peeve for me.... Honest answer, easy navigation, large photos but not overwhelming my screen and no flash. If I cannot look at your site on every platform I just shut it off... I also like clean - many sites are way too clean but in the clean I also want to know more about the photographer than a name and contact information - if I was going to hire me is a way I look at many sites. I certainly know my site is not a perfect example of this but I also work as i hear suggestions to try to meld it into a usable knowledgebase of information for me and my clients. I want a site I wan to come back too, and I rarely do this with most if not all photo sites, plus it needs to have an RSS feed plain and simple or I will never revisit it unless you are B&H Photo.
