Who Is Searching For Me Online?

Why many US startups pretend to avoid and are critical of offshoring on different forums and blogs when actually they are searching the length and breadth of online freelancer marketplaces for cheap but highly skilled developers from Eastern Europe and South Asia?

  • I know that I am not armed with any concrete stat, but let us be honest, whenever the issue of outsourcing and offshore developers comes up on different online forums and blogs, there are always some highly opinionated responses from some key people of  startups or small tech firms who would tell their stories how they have found offshore developers to be somewhat incompetent and unproductive, and how switching their development to US based developers saved their butts. In at least two cases, I have found these responses came from people who actually have a large offshore team, and are on the process of expanding it. They have zero development activity in their HQ in California. I knew it because I was working for them as an offshore consultant. Their idea was cool, they have accumulated multi-million dollar funding, but still they can't afford Ivy League/CMU/MIT/Stanford educated AI/CV/ML experts even though they hail from some of those universities. So, their last resort is offshore consultants like me who are not good as their CMU/Stanford counterparts, but head to head in skill with an average American consultant holding MS/PhD in AI/CV/ML fields and able to work in a fraction of the wage. Those companies are not easily moving away from this development setting. Why some startup founders are so hypocritical about offshoring/outsourcing issue just to look good to their American peers?

  • Answer:

I haven't seen many stories that say never to use outsourcing. Generally, the ones I've seen list some pitfalls to watch out for, and warn that it can be harder than you think. If they have already gone through the learning curve to use offshoring effectively, they might as well continue using it.
