Should RIM give up on the BlackBerry OS and port their email and messaging service over to Android?
-
No one who buys BlackBerry products actually cares about the Blackberry OS. RIMâs greatest assets are its email and messaging services. Could RIM possibly maintain these two assets while upgrading to the more modern Android OS?
-
Answer:
Android cannot currently do the magic that the BlackBerry does on the data connection to enable push IM and messaging but at the same time save power. Of course, Android can (and will?) catch up.

Yes, but I think it should be WebOS from Palm, actually. Android is a ship that has sailed for RIM, whereas WebOS is still fresh and new (by market saturation), and arguably a superior technology to Android.

It is unlikely that RIM will want to be 1 / 100 carriers of Android. They currently have significant global market share and will want to remain in the "top leagues". I believe they are currently trying to port the QNX platform to their smartphone so this rules out the Android option.

There is no reason they couldn't and shouldn't ship both devices and a la carte software, just as Apple ships iTunes and Safari for Windows.

I agree with Chris on all counts. Blackberry's still have significant market share because the architecture is known and fairly secure. Android has some definite pluses but it needs to mature as a platform and make significant security improvements. Google is going to have to deal with the fragmentation issue soon and I personally am waiting on their answer before I invest any effort or money in to the Android platform.
