Can I major in computer science/engineering?

Can a math major, computer science minor get the same jobs as a computer science major?

  • Two scenarios: 1] The math major, computer science minor, would have a couple of independent projects and research with faculty, while the computer science major would only have coursework. 2] Take out the factor of independent projects and research; which has an advantage in landing the same programming job?

  • Answer:

I faced this same decision and chose a Comp Sci major with Mathematics minor.  I ended up taking all the required courses for both, but had to choose because I did not have enough credits for a double-major.  So my experience is that if you have the interest, declaring a major won't prevent you from learning something else.  However, I do think having the Comp Sci degree made me more marketable in IT.  In fact I have since been part of hiring others and all else the same if I had to choose between someone who minored in CS and someone who majored, I'd more strongly consider the latter.   That all goes out the window when the resume/cover letter details projects and experience.  (Eventually I went back to school to follow up on my mathematics education with a master's degree, so keep that in mind as an option too!)
