What is the IP of mail server behind firewall?

What are good ways stop Gmail from banning a mail server IP address?

  • Example: I have my own domain and use Sendmail to forward all email to my gmail address.  This works but it also forwards all the spam targeting my email addresses. Lately Gmail has been intermittently blocking the auto-forwarded email (including non-spam email) with the following error: "550-5.7.1 Our system has detected an unusual rate of unsolicited mail originating from your IP address. To protect our users from spam, mail sent from your IP address has been blocked."  Of course, the spam is not * originating* from my server, but originating elsewhere and being auto-forwarded by my server to Gmail. I tried contacting Google but no luck. It seems like I may have no choice but to stop using Gmail :(

  • Answer:

Unfortunately increasing numbers of webmail providers are going to take the same attitude to spam as Google/Gmail so I'd suggest sticking with what I think is the best webmail solution. Adding in an additional filter should help resolve your situation. I've heard great things about a service called MailRoute (http://www.mailroute.net/) essentially it sits between your email address and Gmail and filters out all the Junk Mail. They offer a 15 day free trial so you can evaluate the performance before deciding if it's the service for you.

There are many things that you could be doing incorrectly. Number of symultaneous connections to gmail/IP Number of emails sent per SMTP connection Number of emails sent per minute/IP Invalid email addresses in your list spam complaints All this and more will negatively impact your delivery rates. I do the same as you do and I use spamassassin on my side and it works reasonably well for couple of years.
