Does anyone know all the words in an English dictionary?

  I don't know whether anyone actually does know all the words in an English dictionary, but I do think it's possible. The person would probably have to be a savant with a photographic memory. Someone like Kim Peek (the inspiration for the movie Rain Man) could likely have done it. (He often memorized pages from the phonebook and was able to tell people he had just met what their phone numbers were.) Whether someone who is not a savant could accomplish this task, I'm not sure. Humans have an amazing capacity for memorization. (Just look at all the random trivia Ken Jennings was able to pull out during his stint on Jeopardy.) But I think that memorizing all the words in an English dictionary would have to be achieved at the expense of some lost memories. Interference theory claims that learning new information results in the loss of some old information. So I guess the question you would have to ask yourself is "Is learning all the words in an English dictionary worth forgetting all my friends' phone numbers?" If you have them all programmed into your cell phone, then the answer is yes.
