Why do people drive on the different side of the road in the UK?

Do people run on the same side of the pavement as the side they drive cars on the road?

  • In Canada we drive on the right side, and I notice most people run/walk on the right side of the pavement. Was wondering how true that is of other countries that might drive on the other side (e.g. UK).

  • Answer:

Short answer: they should.  I've run in America and Australia, and on marked pedestrian trails the rules of the road apply (ie, I ran on the right in the US and on the left in Oz). Of course, when running in the road, you should always run AGAINST traffic (thus, on the left in the US) to see oncoming cars.  Bikes should behave like cars on roads however (bike on the right in the US, yield to oncoming pedestrians).

I run in Seattle, Colorado and Cape Town, South Africa. In general I'll run facing oncoming traffic. I've had a cyclist friend killed by a truck from behind, so that's motivation enough. On Tafelberg road along table mountain there are a few blind corners and I'll stick to the outside of the corner where there's usually more visibility and sidewalk.  It's fairly hilly in Colorado where I run so as I'm approaching I'll switch to the same side the cars are on (right side in USA) and then switch back to facing oncoming traffic as I crest the hill. That way I'm less likely to surprise a driver coming over the hill. It sounds like a lot of road crossing which may add more risk, but in rural Colorado the roads are empty except for the odd crazy F350 roaring down a country road every 20 minutes and it's that guy I'm trying to avoid.
