How To Learn English Quickly?

How do I learn English well as a non-native speaker with few chances to talk in English?

  • Hello everybody :) I'm a Chinese student who has learn English for almost 10 years, while by far I still cannot use English frequently and properly. For example, I'd like to watch movies or TV series in English for fun, but hardly can I understand every single words of the videos and I only know part of them. The same to a novel or a magazine. And every time I talk with my teacher from USA, I find it hard to express myself clearly, especially when I want to talk about some details or describe something. Just like most of the Chinese students, we've been taught English for many years but actually we can not use language very well since we don't speak English in daily life. Every time when I have to write some academic papers or essays, I don't know what to It's too bad :(As I decide to go to USA for my graduate program,  I have to improve my ability of English, or I'll not adapt to the life in USA. So, plz tell me How do I learn English well as a nonnative speaker with few chances to talk in English? P.S.  Of course I hope to make friends who are native speakers of English. I  'm now living in Qingdao, Shandong. This is a beautiful costal city in China. If you want to come to China for a visit, I'd glad to guide you for free. Maybe that's a good way to help me improve my English!

I agree with other responses here. Subtitles are great, and at your level I would suggest watching DVDs in English with English subtitles. Learn songs and poems, then when you are reciting them you are learning pronunciation. Then you can practise anywhere.  Thanks for the A2A.

That's right, language education system is not very good in many countries, Slovakia where I come from including. I also studied English for 12 years when I was at the elementary and secondary school and it sucked. I couldn't speak at all. Luckily There are so many great online sources to improve English. :) Here are some I use personally and really enjoy (they are fun and free): http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/ - great website full of podcasts, videos and "game-like" exercises. http://www.youtube.com/user/duncaninchina (youtube channel) - British English teacher who uploads many great videos with subtitles on different topics. http://sharedtalk.com/ - great for searching people to talk to on Skype :) For over a year I have been using Power English audio program - it might be more interesting for you as it is all with american accent and you mentioned you are going to study in USA. :) Program includes transcripts of every audio mp3 so if you don't pick up some word, you can read it. What I like about the program the most is that it's fun and many interesting topics are discussed. You can find review of the program here: http://ivanottinger.com/content/power-english-review. (it's on my blog and the links are affiliate). Also, what has helped me to improve speaking skills is Speech Shadowing technique - you can use it with any audio / video / movie which has transcript or subtitles: http://ivanottinger.com/content/fun-and-effective-way-learn-english-%E2%80%93-speech-shadowing And finally, I believe that if you just went to USA tomorrow with your current level of English, you would be speaking quite good in about 2 weeks of using English (depending on how often would you use it). I wouldn't be worried about adapting to life in USA. :) Please, do let me know how you like my answer by comment or Upvote. Thank you and enjoy English! :)

Good advise. I support the method of learning like a child: do not use the dictionary, use your logics to make a guess when you come across a new word. Read and listen so much that you encounter the word several times and get a confirmation for your guess. Deduce explanations from the words you already know. Analyze the text in your mind as you read it. Revel in the idiomatic phrases. Love the language. Read English literature too, not only American. It uses the language with more complexity and wider vocabulary. Read also texts from different periods ; reading Austen is a good way to fall in love with the language. Read, listen, write. A lot.

To learn a new language, you have to look how it is used in its culture. English is good for writing research or in subjects of logic, such as law. Most papers you will write here will be based on citing sources, evidence, making points with supporting statements, etc. This can be very different in the use of language on another country. In some way, there is different values, rules, and beliefs behind the use of each language. Grammar and syntax, I think you will get used to it, as long you spend more "time" on English than your native language. It is very easy to do given this world is so globalized. Instead of surfing websites that are Chinese, surf only the ones that are English

Not helpful to learners, but can be a negative example. I am an undergraduate student in Hunan University(in China), and I have been in deep trouble with my spoken English, cause I am afraid of talking to anyone, even my roommates. Guess what? I miss a few good jobs. If there is an opportunity than can back to two years ago, things will not happen to this point. Really thank those who answered the question,  I am on my way~--------If there are grammar mistakes ,please tell me~ -----

Practice makes it perfect. I'd suggest that you watch English shows, films. Use the subtitles at first.. Then gradually lose the subtitles. Reading good English news papers also helps. Have a dictionary with you while reading, in case you don't understand some words. But all this depends on your practice and the amount of effort you put in to really learn the language. I know a few friends from China who felt that they were bad in English, but really as they became confident, their language improved. Just a little bit of practice is all you need. Good luck! P.S:  don't start getting on chat websites with the intention of learning English. Does more harm than good and you'd probably end up meeting a lot of perverts.
