What are some ways to earn money in electronics engineering, if one is overqualified to be a technician, but doesn't have a BSEE or MSEE degree to be seen as a hirable engineer?

(and needs more income than that)

Answer:
Start out by doing independent or boutique work in the area of electronics engineering that interests you. A long time family friend of mine, a guitarist, started put with his own audio boutique, rewiring higher end home audio and musical equipment. No engineering degree. Over time, his reputation grew, and because he was working with musicians, he was at one point referred to a fairly prominent company that made electronic effects. He quickly became the head of engineering, and thousands of musicians to this day swear by tubes he created. He eventually was tapped by an ultra high end home audio manufacturer and now lives in Sweden, travelling the world for the company as their chief engineer. Another friend, armed only with a degree in music and some independently acquired book knowledge, found a way to modify an existing guitar effect to create more desirable (to some) sounds from it that the manufacturer had overlooked. He still sells his pedals on the Internet part time, and groups like the Black Crowes and ZZ Top are notable customers with public endorsements of his products. With the Internet, your ability to find people who want the products you can either modify or create from the ground up is limited only by your own desire to find them. Even if you aren't creative enough to write your own sales pitch, you can easily barter your services with a copywriter or marketer to most effectively get the word out about your capabilities. Better initially to find your own treasure than to wait for someone to recognize skills you may actually have but that are uncredentialed.

A2A, Thanks. With a broad question, I'll give a broad answer. Not to sound too glib, but you need to be in the part of the business that either makes or sells a product. A friend here in Atlanta owns a firm that repairs circuit boards used in ATM's, he employs 30 people. To make decent money you need to capitalize out what you're paid. I'd look at B2B and not just because I hate the consumer market. It pays better and the barriers to entry are higher. There are multiple distributers of electronic equipment and/or servicers of the same. Develop specialized industry experience, (elevators, transport, et al.) if you don't have it already. It makes it a lot easier for you to sell yourself if you can quickly and precisely tell someone what you can do for them. Your needs are less important than theirs. It's how all of us see the world.
