What is the best shop for home delivery grocery?

I am planning to start a small business in USA. Similar to home delivery of grocery in my area but I don't have any idea from where to start, how to find whole sale dealers nearby area? How to find delivery man? Etc. Basically I would like to know a to z to start a small business.

  • Answer:

Hire an experienced consultant with a proven track record. There are way too many moving parts to answer on Q. This is a huge undertaking with many months of planning. Be aware that you would be competing with 3-5 companies who have recently received millions in funding in this same space. Home delivery of food and laundry are now technology based with deep pockets.

Assuming you have experience in "home delivery of groceries" but not in the USA, I would suggest you partner with someone who is doing it, or doing something very similar. Offer a little bit of capital, make it a clear commitment for a year or two, and then proceed to learn all details and things that happen in the business. The advantages of this approach are multiple, not only you will answer the questions you have (whole sale dealers, delivery man, etc.) but you will learn about things you have not even identified today. The weaknesses or difficulties can also be a few. It can be hard to find a partner that accepts you and allows you to have access. It can be hard to find the exact same business model you are thinking about. Among others. If, on the contrary, you don't have any experience in this type of business, or you don't have capital, I would suggest you work for a similar operation. Working for a business will give you a lot of information about its operation, access to distributors, clients, etc. Make sure you do not violate non-compete clauses, and even if you don't sign any, I would suggest you do not get into unfair practices such as stealing secrets, clients, etc. To avoid doing the wrong thing, you might want to work in a geographical area that is distant to the one where you end-up opening your own business. Last, if non of these alternatives are possible. If I were you, I would start very, very small. Whole sale dealers such as Costco, Sam's Club could be a good place to begin. Try to sell your service to just one or two people and see how it goes. Grow it from there. Better yet. if you allow me, I would modify your concept and not buy from whole sale but just allow the customer to pick where they want you to buy from and charge a simple fee for doing it for them. Just an idea. Best of luck!

Just start....go out there and ask questions! Do some competitive landscaping to see how the "similar" delivery service in your area is currently doing it - and make it 10x better, 10x faster and 10x cheaper  in order to win over the market ;)Great q!

Frankly, you simply should not start the business you are describing. If you know so little about it that you need to ask Quora for an A to Z guide, then you are not heading in a direction where you have a high probability of success.
