What is a good marketing plan?

Where can I find a good example of, or a template for, an easy-to-use, small business, marketing plan?

  • I would like to help my consulting clients write their marketing plans, but they usually tell me they don't have time to write one.  I need a template for, or an example of, a marketing plan I can give them, so they can simply fill in the blanks to get their thoughts down on paper.    I'd also like the tool to produce an online version of their plan they can refer back to and edit over time. I've found some business plan writing tools online, but they are very expensive and come with other tools my customer's don't need.   There has to be a good template for a marketing plan out there somewhere! I've been searching for years and haven't found one good enough to pass on.

A great book http://www.businessmodelgeneration.com/ that helps you create the basic canvas for your business plan. The preview alone provides a decent guide.

Apologies in advance for the blatant self promotion, but my company runs a site dedicated to marketing planning at http://www.mplans.com/ The site has tons of free marketing plans and marketing plan templates you can check out. We also sell marketing planning software that does what you are looking to do, including the ability to upload a plan to a secure, private website for online sharing with your team. An alternative for small business clients is to take a look at John Jantsch's book: Duct Tape Marketing. While not specifically a plan template, it guides readers through the process of creating a marketing plan. You can find the book on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Duct-Tape-Marketing-Practical-ebook/dp/B001NXCXVC I hope this helps. Please feel free to follow up with more specific questions if needed.

It is difficult to have one template for a marketing plan. As each business is different, each will have different needs and different combinations of marketing requirements. My suggestion is to find a reputable marketing specialist that will work with you. If they know that you will be sending X number of clients to them annually they may even grant you a lower fee which you can transfer the savings to your clients (as only your clients can receive the lower rates and it adds more value to your services). You compile a list of main questions that the marketing specialist deems as "required to know" information. Then you can create a simple questionnaire for your clients and submit it to your marketing specialist along with the client contact info. You do what you do best, let your clients do what they do best and bring in someone else to cover the marketing (what they do best).
