What is wrong with local marketing?

What marketing services for promoting local businesses exist in India?

  • I found very few credible sites for promoting Indian local businesses. Will Yelp extend its local business service to India?

  • Answer:

Just Dial - http://justdial.com I think one aspect that the other answers to this question miss is that most of India is not online. The number of people who use the internet is probably around 5-10% and that includes people who used it once in the last 1 month. For people who use the internet daily (which is what is needed for an online site to be effective at promoting *local* businesses), the numbers are abysmally small. By contrast, mobile phones (with SMS, but not with internet access) have much, much more penetration, and that's where the real answer is going to lie. As far as an existing company which has some level of name recognition and recall in the space of local business referrals / marketing, I'd say JustDial (http://justdial.com). It has good coverage across the country, many people (even those who don't use internet regularly) use it for referrals.

My recommendation, Google Place with Hotpot (http://places.google.com/rate)! It has IPhone and Android application. And Google is first priority for searching (even local). The adoption of Mobile web is really helping big brands and changing the traditional marketing/advertising systems. The catalog or directories are dying. People are using these networks for recommendation and review. The following image makes it more clear. Only JustDial and IndiaMart are up (6 months time frame)  because of there spending on many advertising (TV, Online and Offline) campaigns. Local, until now, was not a buzzword. Local businesses & retail stores have been going through a rough patch lately, seeing a significant base of their customers move online & they are unable to do anything about it. Every person online does not necessarily shop. There are a lot more reasons apart from Ecommerce as to why are people online. It is now time that local businesses adapt to their customers. They have to think of reaching out to their customers where they are & improve the store name recall. A customer maybe searching, emailing, spending time on social media or even just browsing. For e.g. There is a good chance that your customer is searching on his/her mobile phone which means their location is known to Google. If your business has a proper online presence, Google knows you are in close vicinity of the search-er & provide the services they are looking for, your store shall show up higher automatically. Local relevancy & proximity are BIG factors in search results today. I don't wish to do any self-pimping here so will keep it short. With deeper smartphone penetration into Indian market and already exploding mobile apps market, local businesses can promote their businesses via their brand mobile apps. Restaurants, cafes, spas & salons are all local businesses that can increase visit frequency, drive sales and establish deeper connection with their existing customer base through their private-label mobile apps. The existing customers can download this app, leverage the services using the interactive features (like social corner for feedback, 1-touch reservation, therapies list & offers in case of spa and digital menus for restaurants, music, videos, mailing lists, push notifications etc.) and promote your restaurant/spa to in their social networks to bring in new customers. SnapLion is a trusted instant app building platform that has helped many local businesses in their marketing efforts by building world-class mobile applications. In India there are many local as well as national level sites promoting local business. Some of them are justdial, indiamart, indiainfoline, sulekha and asklaila. Other than these, there are a lot of startup's focusing in specialized areas of interest. They are doing well and are helpful for promoting local businesses.

Hmm. For business I recoomend only three sites. http://sellrbuyr.in http://olx.in http://quikr.com No need for other sites, they are just waste of time. Even with olx the max no. of replies is only 2 to 4. Also our ad goes to the bottom of our page as soon as we post it. But with http://sellrbuyr.in my ad stayed in first page. They are rotated to get more exposure.
