What are the limitations of using an iPhone with a portable WiFi/3G router for connectivity?

Traveling with a SIM-locked iPhone. Is it feasible to use a portable WiFi/3G broadband router for connectivity. Aside from calls and SMS, what won't work? Will location service still work through the network and not using the hardware GPS?
