How to send videos wirelessly?

How can I send my Go Pro Hero 3+ Black Edition videos to the net while I am traveling long distance on my bicycle?

  • The upcoming summer I and my bicycle are going to cross Romania-Serbia-Montenegro route. This moment I am gathering my gear and I am in a quite wonder, since my intention is to document my whole journey to the blog in real time with a bulk of photos, videos and text, as I will be on the road. How is it possible?... Well, I have already figured out most of the details, until I got into this malady: Go Pro Hero 3+ Black Edition camera (the one I am planning to buy) brings forth videos that weight quite a much. How on earth should I send them to The Net, being somewhere in the middle of nowhere?... Suppose I will have an access to The Internet, so how long will it take me to upload let’s say a 10-minute video? Is it still worth to buy the Go Pro for this purpose? Maybe there are other options to create high quality, sweet looking videos and transfer them to The Net straightaway? Ultimately, maybe you can hatch some sophisticated strategy that could solve my problem. I will be extraordinary grateful for any answers :) P.S. I also want to have the Go Pro camera, because I want gain some filming experience. PS>PS I will put my videos to my blog through youtube. However, if there is faster way to send them, I could transfer them to my friend and he would upload the videos to my blog. PS>PS>PS What if I go ask some locals so that I could pump the data to their computers and set it uploading to the blog or transferring to my friend and then leave, while they allow the procedure to be finished? Do you think it is possible? How could I make this strategy more possible? Some other details I didn't mentioned above: I am going to buy a solar panel (10-20 watts) and charger for my energy supply. However, apart from the GoPro camera, I will bring a laptop, e-reader, DSLR camera and cell phone (only for emergency), therefore my energy resources will be limited. For this reason I won't be able to upload my videos during the night in a tent.

  • Answer:

Connect your GoPro to a Dropbox account and have it automatically sync images via the GoPro app on your iPhone.  You could also look for or even create an IFFT recipe to accomplish this.

Ok, let's face the problems. 1. Video files are gigantic, you will get a file of 1G for a 10 minutes 1080p video. If you have a 64G card, it will be used up within 8 hours. If your trip is more than a week, a 500G hard disk may not be enough. 2. Video on a bike are boring. It may sounds cool, and some video may looks cool on YouTube. But it envolve a heavy editing from tons of footages. If you record 1 hour of your trip, I am quite sure only 30sec to 1 minute of it are worth watching. 3. It's difficult to upload it to the net. 4. With wifi turned off, the battery of gopro only last 1:30 hour. So it's not very likely you can record let's say 4 hours a day. So, my suggestion: 1. take videos only when the surroundings are interesting, and when you in some kind of events(like joining other cyclists, riding into a intersection), and give a lot of commentary to your video, tell your current feeling, introduce the area you are passing through etc. The best ones are interactions with other people. 2. Edit the video at the end of the day when you r resting. Using imovie on iPhone is very easy. 3. Edit the video into a 1-3 minute clip, even a 30 sec video is good enough. Nobody even your mom will watch boring road rolling for 10 minutes. 4. Upload directly from iPhone is ok, but if you don't have a prepaid SIM card with enough data allowance, u'd better stick with wifi in the hostel or Internet cafe. Remember, uploading on the goal will drain your iPhone's battery very quickly. P.s a laptop is impractical, too heavy and uses too much power if you go camping, a smart phone can do pretty much everything now, with much less energy and weight. Gopro connects perfectly with android or iPhone, less so to a laptop.

I recommend going lower tech.  The files from that camera will be quite large.  Unless you are planning to carry your own laptop, most internet cafe computers will not be able to handle those files well.  Or just give up the "real-time" criteria and save them all for processing at the end.  Alternatively, mail memory cards to a trusted friend.
