Will Innovation Fund Ireland attract top tier VCs to invest in Irish companies?

  • The Irish government is making up to €250m available to top tier VCs who set up in Ireland and invest in Irish companies. http://www.enterprise-ireland.com/en/Invest-in-Emerging-Companies/Investors/Innovation-Fund-Ireland/Innovation-Fund-Ireland.html

  • Answer:

The best VC's follow the best deals. There are no constraints on investment imposed by EI (to the best of my knowledge) so they money will follow the deals. It stands to reason that these funds will do *at least* as many deals in Europe as they do in Ireland. Historical DFJ has done later stage investment in Europe, but Polaris's Dogpatch lab is defintely focussed on earlier stage investment and may lead to Ireland getting at least a look in when early stage is examined. At the end of the day location does matter, so people like Brian Caulfield (who manages the DFJ fund) will definitely be predisposed to look at deals in Ireland. Its not a panacea and I can't see either fund setting up in Dublin in the absence of EI investment.

Not on its own.  VCs follow deals.  If Ireland has a vibrant entrepreneur scene and leverages the multinational ecosystem we stand a much better chance of attracting top tier investors.  DFJ and Polaris/Dogpatch are a good start; however, we need to do much much more.  We need to do a better job talking about the entrepreneur scene and attracting international start-ups.  The money follows the dealflow - not the other way around.
