Which are the best Universities in India?

If you are talking about research, the should be considered first! Apart from this you may consider the : IITB, IITD, IITK. IITKgp, IITM and IIT Roorkee. The others aren't great as much! These six are great in some fields; and you should checkout which triumphs the others in which discipline!

There is   no one best univeristy, since India has a lot of good ones with strengts in   different fields. 16 of the top 100 Universities in the BRICS countries are   in India. This include the top 6 IITS, and the universities of Universities   of Calcutta, Delhi and Mumbai. I was just reading some ICFAI university reviews http://www.minglebox.com/college/the-icfai-university-sikkim-gangtok/reviews and they have campuses in multiple locations across the country. If you do your research, you'll find a high satisfaction rate amongst both past and present students. Worth looking into if you ask me.

For Computer Science UG, based on my interaction with people from some of these colleges and my own preference when I was a student. 1. IIT K, B, D, M, IIIT Hyderabad 2. BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus, IIT Kgp, IT BHU (rather IIT), IIT G, IIT R 3. NSIT, IIIT Allahabad, BIT Mesra (main campus), COE Anna University, NIT Trichy, Warangal, Calicut, BITS Goa Campus 4. ISM Dhanbad, DCE (formerly), PEC, Jadhavpur University, NIT Surathkal, Allahabad, new IITs 5. Other NITs, COE Pune, HBTI ... 6. Manipal, VIT, Thapar etc. other colleges 7. edit: Rest not much idea No idea about IISc UG program. EDT: merged previous 2 & 3 to 2.

Let's tackle this by streams. The IITs and VIT dominate engineering. Symbiosis and University of Delhi stalwarts such as Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies are reputed for solid management schools; and of course, the University of Mumbai, one of the oldest in the country, covers a broad spectrum of studies. Different universities excel in different fields. That's not to say you should ignore individual institutes; AIIMS and AFMC are the best in medicine in India. If you're looking to pursue something specific, seek the best institute in that particular course of study.
