What can you do with a computer engineering degree?

What's the difference between computer engineering and electrical engineering? With a bachelor degree in computer engineering, can I apply for a master degree in electrical engineering?

  • Answer:

Most schools will have their EE and CE programs joined in one department known as ECE. Usually, and I base this on my own experience as well as the experiences of many fellow ECE classmates, A BS in EE and CE will be very similar in your first 2 years of school (you'll both learn about circuit theory and you'll both learn some basic programming) and the two tracks branch out in the 3rd and 4th years.  In computer engineering the "unique" stuff you'll learn are things such as operating systems, other fields of programming that aren't the object oriented style that "everyone learns" (things like parallel programming). You could also learn about topics that are popularly researched in CE/CS (computer vision, machine learning, pattern recognition, etc...) In EE there are many topics you could study and will most likely have to choose which concentration you want to pursue. You could learn about: 1. signal processing 2. circuit level stuff such as analog electronic design/digital electronic design 3. Power electronics (used for controlling electrical power supply & distribution) 4. many schools are beginning to create a "sustainability" specialization where you learn about different sources of energy.   The answer to second question is yes, for the most part. Most programs should recognize that as an CE you should have had a reasonable amount of exposure to EE topics and now you're interested in doing a "deeper dive" on the EE side of things.
