What are some websites like MyHeritage?

What web skills/languages should I develop to make websites that really wow people? Like Flash, with no Flash?

  • I currently do a lot of boring, standard websites for small - medium businesses in my city of about 700k people. I want to start doing things on my websites that will look amazing and really impress prospects by making a website not feel like a website at all, but rather, an online experience. What skills should I learn? Parallax? Ajax? CSS3? Something else? Here are examples of sites that I find very impressive and totally make you forget that you're just looking at a website: http://www.diehlgroup.com/ http://www.isaacpvl.com/ http://www.spacho.com/ http://www.squarespace.com/

  • Answer:

DON'T USE FLASH! You should try learning jQuery, Ajax and CSS3. And making good websites is not only about using the right technology. It is also about the correct UX design decisions.

It is not about the skills. First, design what you want to build. Pretty much anything you would be able to design can be implemented by today's web techniques. Then go learn things so that you can implement your design. PS: No Flash, that thing is dead.

I wouldn't say you need to learn any particular skill. What mostly "wow"s people is a bunch of small perfect details, rather than one big glorious effect. Most of the beautiful animated sites would still be beautiful without the animations or dynamic elements.
