How to get a DAAD scholarship?

What is the step-wise procedure to apply or to get a DAAD scholarship?

  • Answer:

Thanks for the A2A, Vamshi Muga has covered almost everything I have to say. However I'll add the content from a similar question I answered a while back (. Hope you find something useful. Though they say the CGPA cutoff is  8.5, for DAAD WISE 2013, I do not know of anyone from NITK who got  through the program with a CGPA lesser than 9.2 or so. Therefore I hope  your pointer is upto the mark (this may vary every year, and with the  institute you are from). Although they do not specifically state the  basis on which they select students for DAAD WISE, I believe your CGPA  is the most important criterion An invitation from a professor in  a German university/institute is of course a must. So I suggest you  start searching for good research groups and their respective  professors-in-charge from various universities/institutes that are  supported under DAAD. To build up the quality of your research, I  suggest it is always better to go by the esteem and research output of  the group you plan to work with. The repute of the university/institute  is second to this. Additional pointers: -Work well this semester (you have two months or so before the DAAD deadline) to build up you research profile so that you not only have a greater chance of getting through  the programme, but also because it will greatly improve your chances of  getting an acceptance from a professor in that field or a related one. -Younger,  up-and-coming professors tend to be more enthusiastic and are more  likely to be interested in taking interns and guide you more  effectively. -Read up on the topic you plan to intern on. Read fully a  few good papers (preferably review articles) on that field, preferably  ones written by the professor you're writing to. It does not matter if  you do not  In your first mail to the professor, do not simply ask to be  taken in as an intern, but ask doubts and make suggestions about the papers you've read.  This should not be difficult if you are genuinely interested in that  field. Show your interest in research on the topic and not the 'German  intern' brand. - Specify, in the mail, that you will be applying through DAAD and make it clear to the professor that you will not be requiring any funding by him/her or his/her department. -Write  a solid terse, technical project proposal (once you've got an  acceptance and have worked out your research topic with your professor).  [I think mine was 1.5 pages long]. Read and get it reviewed by as many  people as possible- subject professors, English teachers, seniors,  relatives, friends etc. Highlight the potential applications and impact  of your proposed field of research.

Thanks for the A2A :) The present answer is directed towards students applying for an internship during their under graduate summers.Firstly, DAAD awards scholarships under the programme called WISE for indian students from a select set of universities to pursue internships at a german university. You can read all about the application procedure in the website here:  http://www.daaddelhi.org/en/14498/index.html The first thing to manage is a german host i.e you need a german professor willing to guide you through the course of your internship.Once you can manage one(done through mailing) the rest of the application procedure is pretty smooth as long as you show a high CGPA(atleast 9.2 as per my observation). Suggestions on how to find professors: 1.Firstly DAAD maintains an excellent database of all research labs in germany within their website(https://www.daad.de/en/) Searching for keywords within your interested research area(e.g: Wireless Networks,Signal Processing etc) will list out the labs within these area from which you can then browse the page for a specific professor's contact.Personally,I have found this procedure a bit tedious as it is a bit difficult to get the exact professor's mail. The other alternative(and an efficient one) would be (2). 2.'Google Advance Search' .... I have found this a very useful tool in searching for the contact of any professor in any country(not only germany).Firstly go to: http://www.google.com/advanced_search Here you can set the country preference to germany(only results from german pages would be generated).Once this is complete , google gives you a very intelligent way to search and to find pages with the exact keywords that we need. One such method would be to type in the words like 'Professor wireless networks' in the 'all these words' section and then simply put '@' in the section 'this exact word' ..this would only generate pages that contain the exact mail id of the professor...this was just one way to generate useful results and you can easily play around with the advanced search(changing keywords) and manage the contacts of professors interested in your area. 3.The last way would be to use the research database http://www.researchgate.net/ .This website contains a database of all the researchers in a particular area. Most German professors do maintain a profile in this website. However, you will need your own institute mail id to use this service(a simple gmail id won't work). The other downside of this is that you wont be able to get exact mail id of the professor but only his name and his papers, so you will have to google out the contact again. On what to write in your mails: 1.There is no general rule to what to write, but try to make it a personalised mail rather than randomly mailing it to many professors.Read the professors profile carefully(Most german profs and labs do mention if they are interested in taking interns .... so refrain from mailing if they particularly mention that they are uninterested this summer) 2.DO NOT MAIL to two professors of the same department at the same time. 3.The semester in germany starts in October. Most of the professors would be in their vacations in August till mid September,so the best time to start mailing would be from mid September. 4.Finally, stay patient...there is no shortcut. Some general advice: 1.DAAD will pay you (650*2+850)=1850 euros for your internship. From the personal experience of many DAAD scholars, this amount is NOT SUFFICIENT to cover your entire living and travel costs(if you plan to move around a bit). So, although you manage the scholarship, you can bargain the professor for some more funding apart from the scholarship. Would be happy to clarify any other queries :)
