Is question answering (in NLP) a good topic for a B.Tech final year project (CS)?

  • I have selected Question Answering, which is a part of NLP, as a topic for B. Tech final year project. But i am feeling that it is quite complex for a B. Tech project. Can anyone please tell if they have worked on this topic. Are there any subtopics of Q-A which I can take as my project topic? Any suggestions will be helpful.

    Yes. Make sure you choose a very specific aspect or approach that can be completed in a year. How about whether an answer to one question is a helpful answer to another question? You will need a corpus of QA pairs, where the multiple QA's are related to each other.

Any work in NLP is really a good choice for final year project. You can also explore the possibilities of doing projects in opinion mining or similar domain where you can master your skills in both NLP and data science. Best wishes :)

It is definitely a good topic for a final year project. If you are feeling it that it is complex for B.Tech project, you can work out with your faculty mentor to simplify it or break it so that it can be completed in an academic year. Or you can explore some helper third party libraries (should be easy to use otherwise will divert the focus of the project) which can help you to complete the project in time. I have not worked on this topic, so further I cannot help that much. I have only surface knowledge that it works on state and keywords which determines what should be the answer.

I am assuming by good you mean: 1. Doable in 1 year of project timeline. 2. Makes you more knowledgeable. 3. Is the topic of relevance and has both theoretical and practical advantages. I am not sure about 1). Though I can definitely say that 2). and 3). are satisfied.
