Are low-calorie alternatives always preferable?

Does money make people unhappy due to all the alternatives one gets = there is always a "better" choice?

  • Answer:

All humans experience joy and sorrow regardless of their relative standing in the social spectrum of success, of which wealth forms a part. However, the higher you are on that spectrum (i.e. more wealth and past success), the more it takes to feel new joy, and the less it takes to feel new sorrow. The lower you are on that spectrum, the less it takes to feel new joy, and the more it takes to feel new sorrow.

There seems to be a fantasy that having money is somehow worse than not having money.  Wrong.  Money doesn't solve all problems, not by a long shot, but it makes many problems disappear and makes some other problems easier.  It does create its own problems in turn, but those problems caused by having money are generally less severe than the alternative.  More important than, "Too much money," is the character of the people who have it, where they go it, how they got it, and how well they know to manage it.  I grew up in fairly severe poverty, at least as measured in the United States.  For our family of 8 people, the total income one year was $1,500.  In many ways this still affects me, for instance, I have trouble throwing away anything that MIGHT be valuable, because, "you just never know when you might need it."  Also, being poor motivated me to achieve more in my life (I went to approximately 12 years of college and other training after high school) and I currently make a VERY good income every year and I own property and two businesses with approximately 50 employees.  But money makes many things easier in life for me and my family.  At the same time, I don't 'worship' money or perhaps see money in the same light as other people.  To me, money represents freedom, to do more of the things I want to do.  And I definitely like that.

Scientific american published a study years ago about how an excess of choice leads to unhappiness. I tend to agree. Salesmen are successful if they can get you to limit your choices, and you will be happier for it.
