Is Don Draper's Manhattan pad in "Mad Men" season 5 representative of modern home decor in the 1960s?

  • I was surprised by the similarity between home decor depicted in Don Draper's pad (set in late 1960s) and urban home decor common today (low seating, abstract paintings and bright furniture).

    Yes.  The styles of Mid-century modern apartments and furniture are an obsession and source of great delight and interest for millions around the world.  It is a classic set-up.  The first apartment I lived in, the apartment where I was born actually looked a lot like this although I don't think we had a fireplace.    And the ideas and concepts behind the apartment have never gone out of style.  It has sleek modern lines, highlights the display of high-tech gadgetry and manly accessories such a cocktail bar and a leather chair combined with a woman's sense of color and style and makes perfect use of what would be limited space.  Yes, it is a TV set, I get that.  But the ideal expressed here is timeless and will never go out of fashion, at least in NYC,    I just love the colors.

As for the similarity between Don's apartment and today's urban home décor, "Mad Men" has accelerated the trend toward reviving retro styles like mid-century modern (think the Sterling-Cooper offices in the first couple of seasons). It's not surprising that Don't apartment would look like something you'd see today because at least some of today's trends are inspired by..."Mad Men." Is this life imitating art or art imitating life?
