How to view unpublished web site on yahoo?

If you use a computer with a large monitor, how often do you view web pages at full width. And why?

  • For example, I have a large monitor at work because I mutli-task between sites and apps. I have a 27' iMac. I never view a website at full width. The reason that I am asking is because as a competent web designer I create sites for actual users. But I am being asked to create wider pages "in case someone with a large monitor wants to view the site at full screen." Take in mind that this is a low traffic set of product pages. So I was trying to keep it at the standard 960 grid. But if you are one of these random people, please share what sites you would view at full screen, when, and perhaps some reasoning. Like, "I view Google maps at full width because[reason]. But normally I read Yahoo sports at half the screen." Personally I view Google Maps Engine at full width. And if I am watching a movie on Vimeo.

I think this is a chicken and egg problem.  There aren't many websites that have content that that wide.  Most of the time, my browsers have aspect ratios that are 1x1 or taller versus the 16x9 of large monitors.   If there was a compelling reason to have a wide browser, I would certainly consider using it, but it'd initially feel weird and it would have to be a compelling experience.

I'm beginning to see more sites use a responsive design that uses the browser size regardless of phone, tablet, laptop, wide screen, or tv. There are too many options out there to pre-program. Using something like PureCss or other responsive frameworks should help your design work for many users.

Large or small screen, I prefer webpages that do not require horizontal scrolling and aren't wider than 1024 pixels (current screen resolution on my MacBook Pro is 1440 x 900 pixels). I rarely change my browser window size and it annoys the crap out of me if I need to because a design isn't flexible. How often do I view webpages at the full width of my monitor? Never.

I have Quora at full width on my huge monitor right now. I do it mostly to block out the other windows so I can concentrate on one thing at a time. I wouldn't expect the content to take the full width.

I have an Apple cinema monitor on my laptop when its on my desk, and a 24" iMac. The answer is never.  Its the wrong ratio, and the whole point of having a big desktop is so I can see multiple windows at once.

I am on a 27' iMac. I tend to never view anything beyond the half of the screen. This is typically how my screen is setup: code editor on the right. Primary browser window on the top left, secondary browser window on the bottom left. I might view videos on Vimeo at full screen, perhaps once every 2 weeks. And I use

I have 2 22inch monitors at home and work. Most often I will be running different apps and web pages on the separate screens, but, occasionally I will stretch a page over both monitors. I try stretching it and if it looks ok, I leave it in the background, if not, resize it back to one screen. Btw in the City (of London/Financial services) 2 or more screens is pretty standard. Sometime I stretch it to make text easier to read (too lazy to zoom), sometimes to get more images on screen e.g. Flickr.
