Can Google make products with soul or character?

  • There is no doubt that Google has quality and quantity when it comes to engineering talent, but the success of many social networking products has been due in some part to these products having an intangible factor like "soul" or "character." Twitter and Foursquare are examples of social networking products with these intangible qualities. Google products, in contrast, tend to be very good (e.g., Chrome Browser), but extremely utilitarian. Aside from the initial snafu over Buzz's roll out, Buzz seemed to be a nice product, but at the same time felt cold and impersonal. Doesn't the engineering-centric cultural DNA of Google make succeeding in the social networking space a tough task no matter how many or how good their engineers are? Easy. All Google has to do is start hiring some right brain people and not just left brain people. Left brainers do the back ends and right brainers do the front end (UI's) - - that simple!

I'd rather they stick to developing features that worked well and improve my core uses of their products. Honestly, and this is just my own opinion, if you look at something like GMail and ask yourself how can I give this more soul or character you probably need to step out that bubble you're in. I look for soul and character in things that express, like music and art.  Not mail clients and web browsers, I just want them to work well.
