What are the success factors for India MBA grads (IIMs, MDI, IIFT etc.) applying for a second MBA degree in H/S/W/K ? What is the typical profile of those candidates ( GPA/ Workex/ Extra-currics ) and what kind of jobs do they get after completing 2nd MBA?

P.S. - Many students join top Indian business schools at an very early age (22-23) without any work experience, they choose the roles in a particular sector / company at institute-organized placement processes without much understanding whether they are suitable for that sector / job or not. Some of them after 3-4 years apply for 2nd MBA in US or Europe.

Answer:
The success factors for these applicants are the same as for any applicant - high GPA, high test score, strong work experience, focused career goals, stellar recommendations, indications of leadership abilities, etc... Career prospects vary - and depend on individual interests, goals and talents. The only thing that sets this profile apart from other applicants is the first MBA - and this can create a challenge. The applicant will need to fully explain what was gained from the first MBA, what has changed and why the additional degree will be different and is necessary. Some applicants have challenges such as being laid off or having spotty work experience. These are the things that they need to explain. Every applicant has issues with their story. The first MBA can be a significant issue - unless you help the admissions committee to understand the choices made. The story may even be that you were not ready for the first degree, and it was a mistake - that's OK. Just show that you acknowledge your mistake and explain how it will be different this time.

Thanks for A2A. This is less frequent these days than one might imagine given most Indian MBA students do want to stay back in India and hence a foreign MBA doesn't add much more value, not to mention the high cost of the MBA and the opportunity cost. Also I think the reasons for pursuing a second MBA isn't really because someone is stuck in a wrong job but usually to open up global roles. The most favored roles in Indian business schools - investment banks, consulting firms, top marketing firms are also the most favored ones in US schools. Goldman Sachs, Mckinsey, P&G are universal favorites for people looking to enter that sector. This phenomenon was far more prevalent a decade or so back when Indian business schools didn't have any global positions on offer. Since 2005-06, global banks and consulting firms have made offers across countries. I would estimate that today atleast 10% of a top IIM batch ends up in global roles (NYC, London, HK, Singapore). Additionally you have people who move within their firms 3-4 years out of business school to global roles. Important to highlight that even today global roles are largely restricted to banking and consulting and a couple of top marketing names. Among general corporate roles, it is less frequent. In the handful of such candidates I have seen opting for a 2nd MBA, the objective is to try and establish a global career path (US/Europe). I have seen HBS admits in this set (IIM grads applying again) and so I assume success rates are as good as any top candidate. As to placements post 2nd MBA, important to understand that unlike Indian business schools, campus placements are less structured in US/Europe. Also your pre-MBA experience weighs heavily in deciding your post MBA career path. Empirically I believe consulting is the usual port of first call followed by corporate roles in industries the candidates have experience in. It is not very different from regular MBA candidates who apply after 4 years of experience and get through. An MBA isn't all that different from getting married I think. You can get married at 25 and regret it or do it at 30 while wondering about the one that got away. The lucky ones get married to their high school sweethearts at 25 and wouldn't have it any other way! And then there are the happy bachelors who rule countries and start companies :)
