What is this card trick?

What's a good card trick for my Magic Castle audition? (Not too hard, not too easy.)

  • I'm a beginning magician and auditioning at the Magic Castle in the next month or so. I am looking for a good illusion for my audition. The audition panel wants to see something that requires practice and skill (no self-working/super easy tricks like Invisible Deck or Eight Card Brainwave)... and I want something that isn't so difficult it will take me forever to master. So I'm thinking of an illusion with maybe a basic move or two and a great presentation. It doesn't have to be a card trick but those are my favorite right now. ;-) To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, my other 3 illusions that I'm doing are all card tricks: McDonald's Aces (showing basic card skills like Elmsley Count, in-jogging, etc.), Mixing (demonstrating false shuffle and pinkie break), and a nice version of Three Card Monte. I've heard that it would be okay to do Coins Across and/or Jumping Knot (they fit the criteria), but I'm not crazy about either. I'd love a nice mentalism routine or another great card trick.

When I auditioned for the Magic Circle, I performed tricks that I knew well enough that I didn't have to think about them, and focused on the making the patter amazing. Don't think in terms of tricks - think in terms of what you want to say. Then say it, using tricks that you know inside and out. Do you really want to learn a brand new trick for this audition?

If you want to really impress magicians, one thing to think about is doing at least one illusion with your own routining. What makes the best magicians the best is not jus technical skills, but showmanship.  In fact,a strong dose of the latter can cover from some real lacks in the former.

Here is a neat trick I like to perform. It's called Collins Aces. Enjoy!

You can perform Blindsided by Oz Pearlman! Bodyguards by Jay Sankey! I loved them as a beginner. They are very nice effects you can master in a few hours!

Gee, this is going to sound harsh, and I don’t mean it to be. If you try to learn a new trick, you will not be at your best. You are asking the wrong question. Do not try to master a new trick for an audition, or show. It’s the worst thing you can do, and any magician at The Castle will tell you the same thing. Here’s my advice. Do what you do for laymen. Use the same patter, and misdirection. Start rehearsing ASAP. Not practice. Rehearse. Dress the way you’re going to dress, and act as if a room full of people are watching you perform.Do not try to fool them. They will be more impressed by your demeanor, and thorough preparation, and professional delivery.Do your best stuff, and do it well. It will ease the burden of trying to perfect a new trick, in a month, or so. It’s a rookie mistake.
