What do you have to do to become a good architect?

What should student do to become a good architect?

  • Answer:

Travel. Be it a humble walk through the woods or an extravagent vacation to Dubai, youll be able experience all facets of architecure/engineering/design. I've been afforded the luxury of being able to travel around the world for work and vacation, and the experiences I picked up during those travels far outweighed the 5 year education I received. Learn about the culture and how the architecture relates or responds. Japan introduced me to the beauty of precise wood joinery. Hong Kong taught me how to employ concrete and rebar to combat hurricane and natural forces. Taiwan opened my eyes to the inherent beauty of concrete cast in metal sheets and wood. I'm currently learning welding and metal work at home (United States) And I hope to travel to Scandinavia at the end of this year to study their sustainable architecture. Of course if you're strapped for cash just take a walk. Observe how people interact with their surroundings in malls, parks, coffee shops, etc. The best architect in my opinion is nature. I believe it to be the origin of the phrase 'form follows function'

Travel is great. However, we are fortunate to not HAVE to travel to explore... the internet provides tons of material and photographs from around the world, available for study. - Don't limit your study of architecture to what's happening now, or just 10 years ago. Study what's survived. Such buildings have been the foundation and inspiration for architecture and architects for millennium. - Approach architecture from the mindset of admiring culture... study the unique character enriching each culture's architecture. - A one size (type, expression) fits all approach chips away at the very character we all enjoy seeing and experiencing when we explore other places. - Software is a design development or drafting tool... not a conceptual one. - Sketch, collect photos and drawings, and engage in forums where you communicate with peers and senior practitioners to absorb a variety of perspectives. - Avoid aggressive "I'm right, you're wrong" forums and/or discussions. Avoid forums and/or discussions in which everyone parrots each other (one frame of mind). Engage people/forums interested in communicating questions and answers about any topic. - Do not accept opinions from those who are not willing to provide a thorough explanation upon request. Opinions are common. Studied, knowledgable opinions and explanations are valuable.
