Which crystal case do you think is better?

Why am I not able to communicate in a bigger group? People often think I am really shy or too private which is not the case.

  • So I did some self analysis and figured out one of the reason. English is my second language and I don't feel confident talking in a bigger group, sometimes because I am at loss of words or sometimes I think that I am not using the right grammar, which makes the situation more awkward. I feel I am not very expressive when talking about general stuff or something other not related to work. What could be the other reasons? How to deal with this? Please help.

  • Answer:

Hi ! Talking to a bigger group (say 50 people , that is the number that we can call as a big group in day today life) does require confidence. Its not easy for most of us. Talking in a language other than our mother tongue is even more challenging.  Its a common issue. So you are not any different. Since you have mentioned that you did self analysis then you are already half way curing your problem. Many people don't even try to do that and live with self rejection. When we talk in other languages , it is obvious that we need to figure out grammar and sometimes we don't find appropriate words. After all you are thinking in your first language and translating matter into the language in which you are delivering your speech. It requires time for processing and hence demands practise. If you feel confident with the language and subject you are talking at , provided you are comfortable with the people you are addressing ; you unknowingly become expressive. You use hands , eyes and body in sync to the speech. Its not an independent problem. There is no other reason. What you can do is : Practise. Its almost cliche but practise in front of mirror. To begin with , try conversation with smaller group.Preferably people who won't judge you or be-little you and have good hold on English.Welcome constructive criticism. Don't fake an accent. You can't simultaneously correct your grammar, seek appropriate words and create an artificial accent. Watch English movies (not the one loaded with expletives), read English blogs , newspaper and novels. It will help you make a bank of words. Write down phrases you come across and try to use them. Don't get disheartened when someone corrects you and cuts you mid way.Its not a cake walk. It sometimes hurts when someone corrects you but you eventually learn that for eternity. People who are polyglot, could learn multiple languages because they fall in love with those languages, the culture of the origin country and its literature and art. So , love English.Don't make it a tiring exercise on your part because it will wear out your interest soon. All the best.Hope you can address an audience soon.
