How does a school add Google Earth or Wikimapia in their curriculum to make in geography and history classes more interesting?
-
I am an engineering(E&C) grad and a PG in software. If Google Earth and/or Wikimapia were available during my school years, I think I would have gone to study geography or history instead of engineering.

Answer:
I think the answer to your question is Digital Classrooms. consisting of an interactive board and digital content. Digital learning companies like Extramarks Education, where I currently work provide digital learning content to schools and animations are a crucial part of it. These digital learning contents and modules make the learning process more exciting for students. For instance we have an animation on Harappa and Mohenjo daro where we take students on a street level walk-through of the entire towns. You should see how their eyes glitter. You dont really need to integrate wikimapia or google earth as that would not be a part of the curriculum. but digital classrooms would already contain interactive maps, videos and animations that are related to their subject and curriculum.

I cannot entirely agree with you on this claim. I did not have Wikimapia or Google Earth when I was at school, but I loved both History and Geography. I personally feel that it was because I had amazing teachers who brought both these subjects alive in the classroom. My dad taught me geography using a good old atlas and I consider myself quite adept at reading maps. My interest in history and geography has never waned. That being said, integrating Google Earth or Wikimapia in the curriculum can make it exciting for the kids for sure. Since, has already written about Digital Classrooms, I will just talk about using these two in classrooms. Studying about distant countries always seemed a little fantastic to me as a kid because end of the day, I could not really go and see what those places were like. Maybe, Google Earth can help kids here. Something like Google Sky can be used to help them understand astronomy better too. Instead of an annual visit to the planetarium, a monthly class at night might help them appreciate the cosmos and develop an interest in learning more about them. Thanks for the A2A.
