Why does Google make it so difficult for local business owners to control their Google Places listings?

Considering that Google Places are now integral to local search rankings, it seems odd that business owners have such little control over their listings. Google seems to automatically generate listings for one's business at will. These automatically generated listings oftentimes interfere and conflict with one's main Google Places listing and forces the business owner to use resources to claim these new listings and try to remove them. In addition, oftentimes changes that are made to a listing from the Google Places administration area do not go live at all.

The Google Places database is huge, made up of both millions of claimed listings around the world and millions of unclaimed listings, generated by third party providers and information about local businesses on the web. It's a lot of data to keep correct and dynamic at scale, and we have a complex system at work on the backend to get the right information to users on both desktop and mobile. You mention "control.â When a business owner verifies their listing, what weâre doing is giving them additional features within a Google account (access to analytics, etc). We do not guarantee complete control over the listing data that is displayed to our users. Because many of our listings aren't owner-verified and many contain spam, we simply don't allow for complete control. Google Places is not perfect, but we're working daily to make it better and better so that as an owner, you can update your info quickly and with little hassle, while we ensure to the end-user that it's accurate and free of spam. From your question, it sounds like you've experienced a duplicate listing. So, why do they exist and how do you fix them?Why: We have data spread across multiple databases â made up of sources from across the Web â and we bring all that information together to create your local listing. Occasionally, youâll see duplicates of the same listing appear as a result of not all that listing information being reconciled together properly. Also, sometimes, when listing data differs enough (eg., location, title, phone number), weâll create separate listings.How to fix: If the duplicate listing is listed at a different address, it is OK to claim it and make sure the information is accurate. If the duplicate has the exact same basic information (address, telephone), then eventually theyâll combine together into a single listing. Give it time; every several weeks, we push out a giant housecleaning update to that very large index of listings I mentioned above, including duplicate cleanups (our system targets listings with like information, and merges them together). I've mentioned third-party providers, and of course, business owner edits via Google Places. When edits are approved by trusted moderators, they'll go live on the map and generate a listing. There are two major, partially separate problems that should be covered in regards to this question: 1) Where Google gets data from: Google, as mentioned, gets data from numerous sources and it is most frequently not consistent or synchronized. These sources include, but are not limited to: - trusted data providers - such that Google has official agreements with and such that Google does not have official agreements with - unstructured sources - such as company websites, blogs, third-party websites, social media, etc - via Google Places - most frequently submitted by the business owner or by an authorized business representative - via Google Maps - via the Community Edits and Map Maker tools Google still experiences major problems with getting all this information together in a way that satisfies both searchers' and the businesses' needs and expectations. Google cannot rely solely on business owners' contribution as they might be too busy to work on their Google Maps presence, thus it gets information from other sources (data providers and crowdsourcing mainly). A surprisingly low percentage of the business owners have claimed their Google Places listings - less than 20%. 2) When the data gets updated on Google Maps: This happens at infrequent intervals of 6-10 weeks (according to Google and my personal experience). That is one of the reasons why sometimes changes that you make via your dashboard might not show up immediately on the front end of the listing. These updates, which take immensely long time having in mind the importance of Google Places for the local search, bring new information which might or might not be correct. They also frequently bring problems such as duplicates, mergers, "we currently do not support the location", pending statuses, suspensions, etc. To summarize, Google Places is currently a mess and it is built on an unstable basis, so I don't really see how this all could be fixed properly in the next few months/years. A completely new concept is needed.

The last thing I want to be an apologist for Google, but the first thing is that the data that Google is trying to structure effectively (all businesses worldwide) is mammoth. They pull data from numerous locations and there is conflicting information from where they are getting their info. Secondly, Google Places, like many Google products, has suffered from name and focus changes internally at Google. It's had two separate name changes in the last 2 years, 2 changes to the ad program for local small business advertising and Google pulled live help for the ad program just a few months ago. As you probably noticed, the support information area for Google Places is a mess. So here's the good news. Google realizes how much of their search is local, currently running over 20%. Long term, it's critical that they have a rock-solid local solution and they know it. We can only hope that they give Google Places the resources it needs and make it drop dead simple for non-technical business owners to take a advantage of it.

I can understand the case for Google Places; however, I would prefer to see more local places take their own fate on their own hands. Take this site for example, my site, Go-ktown. I took it upon myself to list businesses from around the community, specifically businesses that support Americans stationed in Germany. Even though people can go on Google or Yelp, I provide a more personal approach and can easily manage who is listed there or not. Problem solve.
